President Bola Tinubu has approved multi-billion naira grants for agricultural universities across Nigeria to enhance food production and support smallholder farmers.
This was disclosed over the weekend by Doyin Johnson, a governing council member of the Federal University of Agriculture, Bayelsa State. He made the revelation during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Honour of State Icons and the presentation of certificates of return to newly elected officials of the Intellectual Elite Youth Association of Nigeria (IEYAN) in Lagos.
Johnson emphasized that the grants align with President Tinubu’s vision to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector, reduce dependence on imported food, and create a more sustainable economy.
As a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Johnson urged Nigerians to remain patient and support Tinubu’s administration, noting that the president is systematically addressing challenges inherited from past governments.
"President Tinubu didn’t enter office unprepared. He has spent years strategizing on how to reform the country. One of his first bold moves was tackling the oil subsidy scam, which affected powerful interest groups. Unfortunately, previous administrations failed to address this issue, leaving the nation burdened with debts. In fact, Nigeria just finished repaying a crude oil-backed loan last August," Johnson stated.
He further highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to transforming agriculture, revealing that the president approved N2.64 billion for agricultural development and food security in Bayelsa, a similar allocation for Mubi, and N7 billion for the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
Johnson explained that these investments would lead to lower food prices. "If one farmer sells a bag of rice for N50,000, but another, benefiting from government support, sells it for N25,000, market prices will naturally drop," he said.
He also criticized past administrations for prioritizing oil over agriculture, noting that corrupt practices in mining allowed resources like gold to be smuggled out of Nigeria without government benefit. However, he praised Tinubu for revoking mining licenses and enforcing regulations to ensure Nigeria profits from its natural resources.
Johnson listed some of Tinubu’s achievements, including the introduction of student loans—an initiative he described as historic in Nigeria.
Confident about the country’s future, he assured Nigerians that 2025 will be better than the current year. He called on citizens, both at home and abroad, to support Tinubu in realizing his vision for national development.
