FG Launch AI Training For 6,000 Secondary School Teachers Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI) training program aimed at equipping 6,000 senior secondary school teachers across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with advanced digital skills.

This initiative, spearheaded by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), seeks to integrate AI into the educational sector, revolutionizing teaching techniques and preparing educators to guide students in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Speaking at the program's launch and the unveiling of the Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the initiative as a milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize education.

"The world is undergoing a technological revolution, and Artificial Intelligence is at its core. AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality, transforming industries, economies, and societies," he stated.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that AI integration in teaching will personalize learning, enhance critical thinking, and ensure students are well-prepared for careers in the digital economy. He further noted that the newly developed Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education, approved by the National Council on Education, will serve as a blueprint for consistency, accountability, and quality improvement in Nigeria’s education sector.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmed, highlighted the urgency of adapting to global technological trends, stressing that Nigeria must not lag in the digital revolution. Represented by her Special Assistant on Technical Matters, Dr. Clara Ujam, she reiterated the government's commitment to education reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The AI in Pedagogy training is a crucial component of these reforms, ensuring our teachers acquire the necessary skills for innovative and technology-driven education,” she stated.

The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, described the event as a defining moment in Nigeria’s pursuit of educational excellence. He noted that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, education remains a cornerstone for national development, equity, and economic prosperity.

The AI training, supported by Google Research, Data Science Nigeria, and Olabisi Onabanjo University, consists of five modules and will be conducted virtually over five weeks. This initiative is expected to enhance teachers' AI literacy and improve overall classroom experiences for Nigerian students.
