Corps members nationwide have criticized the Federal Government for failing to implement the approved N77,000 monthly allowance.
Despite an official announcement that the payment would begin in February 2025, many corps members confirmed they still received only N33,000 for February.
The allowance increase was initially approved in 2024, but the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed, attributed the delay to the non-release of funds. However, findings by Sunday PUNCH revealed that the new payment has yet to take effect.
Several corps members expressed their frustration, stating that the N33,000 stipend is insufficient given the rising cost of living.
A corps member serving in Abia State, speaking anonymously, lamented that the allowance barely covers essential expenses like accommodation, feeding, and transportation.
Another corps member in Osun State shared similar concerns, revealing that her monthly expenses exceed N70,000, forcing her to seek financial support from her family.
In Lagos, a corps member decried the hardship, questioning how they are expected to survive on N33,000 amid the economic crisis.
Meanwhile, attempts to get an official response from NYSC’s Director of Communication, Carol Embu, were unsuccessful.
However, a senior NYSC official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the payment of the N77,000 allowance has not yet commenced.
The delay has fueled growing dissatisfaction among corps members, who continue to call on the government to fulfill its promise.
